Rhode Island Bishop Wants Immigration Raids Stopped

leave a comment »

Providence Bishop Thomas Tobin sent a letter to US Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) officials in Boston asking that a general moratorium on immigration raids be implemented. Citing breaking up families and exploitation of migrants as the reason that immigration raids on illegal aliens are unjust, unnecessary, and counterproductive.

Tobin’s action comes during a heated debate over illegal immigration in heavily Catholic Rhode Island. Authorities recently raided six courthouses looking for illegal immigrant maintenance workers and Gov. Don Carcieri, himself a Catholic, signed an order requiring police and prison officials to identify illegal immigrants for possible deportation.

“We believe that raids on the immigrant community are unjust, unnecessary, and counterproductive,” the bishop’s letter says. It urges individual federal agents to consider the morality of their actions and refuse to participate if their conscience dictates.

In such cases, he said, “we urge the Federal Government to fully respect the well-founded principles of conscientious objection.”

Bishop Tobin, what about respect for our federal and state laws? People who break the laws are criminals. Criminal activity is a sin. What about companies that use illegal aliens as slave labor? What about all of the illegal human traffickers that bring illegals across the state line in dangerous, life-threatening vehicles that cause hundreds of deaths a year?
