Campaigning in Iowa, the Republican presidential hopeful called for the U.S. to convene an emergency session of the U.N. Security Council to resolve the crisis.

Georgian troops launched a major military offensive earlier Friday to regain control of the breakaway republic of South Ossetia, prompting a furious response from Russia.

McCain told reporters: “What’s most critical now is to avoid further confrontation between Russian and Georgian military forces.”

He said the U.S. should work with the European Union to put diplomatic pressure on Russia and help establish an independent peace keeping force in South Ossetia.

Barack made a statement. Fox News announcing that the Senator said that Georgia’s territorial integrity must be respected, both Georgia and Russia need to show some restraint (notice the country being attacked is cited first by Obama), keep this from escalating from a full scale war. All sides should enter direct talks. The United States and United Nations Security Council should be in full support of anything peaceful wise resolution wise that should be reached on this.”

Will Obama Break His Vacation For War?

What timing for the McCain campaign that Russian Prime Minister Putin invades Georgia! The last time Russia invaded a country, it resulted in World War II. Will Obama come out of his vacation home to show what a leader he would be in this type of military situation?

If Obama shows military astuteness and resolve with Russia – he will alienate his KOS-off voter base. If he shows that he wants United States to be isolationists and let the countries work it out for themselves, he will give McCain the ammo he needs to win the campaign.

Anyone want to take bets on how long it will take Obama to raise his hands and speak on the aggressive Russian invasion?
