Catholic Sunrise Services Convert Sunbathers

Inflatable Catholic Church in Italy takes the mass to the seashore. I hope they use sunscreen.

Catholic nuns and priests in Italy are following their flocks to the beach this summer, establishing an inflatable church and a beach-convent in the sands to lure sunbathers.

The 30-metre (98 ft) long blow-up church — staffed by priests ready to take confession — will debut on Saturday on the Adriatic coast in the Molise region, an organizer said.

“There will be four or five people singing, with music about God,” said Chiara Facci with Catholic group Sentinelli del Mattino. Night time activities, which will not include Mass, will run from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Inflatable Church

Father Brugnoli, who heads a Catholic youth organisation called Sentinelle del Mattino (“Sentinels of the Morning”), formed in 2000 with the blessing of the late Pope John Paul II, said that the group already offered “spiritual comfort” at motorway service stations, discotheques and seaside resorts. An inflatable church was a logical next step, he said.

Yesterday the structure had to be deflated hastily because of a strong mistral that threatened to lift it into the sky. Father Brugnoli, however, was undeterred. “We want to offer a sacred place where young people in search of God will find a welcome, wherever they happen to be,” he said.
